I always test a calculator before I buy it, because some give the wrong answer when using the % sign. Do not use the = sign in your test. The % sign by itself will automatically give you the answer. Whether the answer is right or wrong, depends on the calculator. Forget how much it cost you. Even some expensive calculators fail this test.

ON A CALCULATOR THAT WORKS CORRECTLY:
1 + 15% gives you 1.15 which is correct. However, different calculators have given me various mystifyingly wrong answers. For instance, the built-in calculator on my Palm Tungsten E2 gives me the wrong answer this way:

1 + 15% gives me 0.16 on the Palm.

Going from my memory, my parents' calculator gives me something like:
1.176983647 when it should be 1.15.
