One day, I came to Romans 9:12-14 (KJV) ( http://tr.im/RomansNine12To14 ) where God says, "Jacob have I loved, but Esau have I hated." I asked myself, how can a God of love hate Esau? The conclusion I came to is the analogy of a fighter pilot.

The fighter pilot has an enemy, and when he blows the enemy out of the sky, he may pump his fist in the air, exclaiming, "YES!" while, simultaneously, feeling terrible that he had to take a life. In the same way, God could say, "Jacob have I loved, but Esau have I hated." It didn't mean he had "only" hatred for Esau, any more than he had "only" love for Jacob. God is the God of Truth, so, surely, he hated Jacob's compulsively dishonest, cheating ways.
