"THE DEVIL IN THE DESERT"

Our temptations do not define us. Rather, we are defined by how we deal with those temptations. Being tempted is not a sin. Jesus was tempted by the Devil in the desert without deserting God's law. The Devil even used Scripture (out of context) as a means of his tempting. Like the music group's name, Twisted Sister, Satan used Twisted Scripture. And he'll do it with you too. Heck, or wait...Hell, he does it with me all the time. Jesus' response was to fight back with pure Scripture.

As an illustration, someone may be born with kleptomania. Stealing may be a temptation he battles with for his whole life. However, he does not have to define himself by his temptation. Instead, he can define himself by overcoming the urge, and doing something constructive rather than destructive to other people's lives. The measure of our character is not how we are tempted; rather, it is how we deal with those temptations.

Jesus had his lonely, hungry days in the desert; and so do we. The Devil is patient; he'll wait awhile for the loneliness and the hungriness to set in before he starts his gentle and Scriptural attack. But remember, keep an eye out for his Twisted Scripture, words out of context, sound bites to tickle itching ears. Like Jesus, we fight back with pure Scripture, with the Word of God straight from the Word of God, because Jesus "is" the Word. And he became flesh. And he conquered the Scripture Twister, and so can we by carrying the words of God (ALL of them) and the WORD of God, Jesus Christ, God's Son, in our hearts.

"CLARIFICATION of 'OUT'" by JTK.CA

CLARIFICATION:

Below is my "OUT" declaration from February 17, 2009. I won't take it back, because every word I said was true, and it was a case of wanting to be truthful, as a follower of Christ. HOWEVER, let me clarify. It is more accurate to say I struggle with my sexuality and what it means to be a faithful follower of Jesus. Pornography and bi-sexuality are both areas with which I struggle. At the point I wrote my "OUT" declaration, I was at a particular up and down phase of that bipolar struggle, in which I was tempted to give up and give in. YET even though I was at that stage, my intent was not to condone (or condemn) bi-sexuality. It was simply an effort to be truthful about where I was in my spiritual journey. Christians are no better than non-Christians. We all struggle with the same things. The only difference is whether or not we ask Jesus to aid us in being victorious over our temptations, or just decide to give in. But it's always a struggle, even for those who have chosen to follow Christ. The closer one gets to God, the more one sees his or her own shortcomings. I believe in eternity, because I could blather on forever. Basically, I'm saying that, if the admission below made some male human beings think that I'm on the market, I AM NOT ON THE MARKET.

NudistPoet JONATHAN TAD KETCHEN ( http://JTK.CA ) just made a major decision to OUT myself as being Bi-Sexual. It only took me 41 years to accept. As a Christian, it's been a difficult realization to come to, but Jesus Christ claimed to be "the way, the truth, and the life." So if he is "the truth" which I believe with all my heart, then I must be truthful as well about who I am if I claim to be his. I am his and he is mine. He saves us, the real us, not the masks we wear.

I am depending on Jesus Christ for my salvation. The Son of God is my only hope. I gave up on Obi-Wan Kenobi.

Stream of consciousness is a form of writing exercise in which you just let the words flow, without judgement. Just sort of throw them all against the wall and see how they pile up. It's also part of the way my brain works creatively. I'm good at making myself laugh. I talk to myself this way when I'm alone. It's an anxiety release. If I'm ever out and about town though, I whisper my craziness to myself, to avoid being carried away in a straight jacket ;-)

Mom has often said to me, "You could always entertain yourself!"

I would very much like to freeze the contents of this elbow hockey, but I'm unable to find the dimple switch. Frost is crunchy in milk, and so are squirrels. Fly me to the moon with a brigadoon delly apply sauce. Family matters in a family, and spoons go next to knives. Frosted tweezer dumpling shenanigans have found me in the middle of the road.

Elk mechanics unite or untie, as the case may be. I've got a lovely lemon lollipop in the beat stew of brain candy. I'm flairing and flaming upon the ebulient crusty tater-tots. Free willy, and Hillary, and Chelsea, and Monica, and the voices in my head. Drop dead Fred was a weird and funny movie, especially lame, when the boom microphone dipped into the top of the frame.

This poem was inspired by an interesting
moment in my life, on Valentine's Day 1991.

I was a walking courier in downtown Toronto,
doing a pick-up or delivery at Scotia Plaza,
the stylish brown skyscraper with the orange
Scotiabank logo at the top. As I entered the
lobby, before I reached the elevators, I saw
an attractive woman with a basket of treats.
As I walked past her, she wished me a Happy
Valentine's Day, as she handed me a chocolate
Valentine on a stick.

It was a gem of a moment that had to be captured
in poetry. Enjoy!

You gave me your heart,
Your heart on a string.
Then you pulled it away.
It's "just" Valentine's Day.

Every second of every day
Someone dies

How do I fit in

And then a lifetime
But I need Your hand
I'm just a child
I will not cross the street alone

So take my will and make it Yours
And we will stride together
Father and son
On our way home
Helping others along the way
Every second of every day

* Tad's Note:
In the Bible, the term "sons of God" refers to ALL believers, whether they be men or women. So before you male chauvinist theologians get all sexist about being "sons" of God, just remember, God will have the last laugh on you. Read the end of the Book of Revelation, when all believers, women and men, become the "bride" of Christ.

I think it was my favourite preacher Charles Price ( http://LivingTruth.ca ) who pointed this out to me. It impacted me as powerfully as it probably just hit you.

Dear Earthlings,

Read about God's NAKED PROPHET in Isaiah 20

and consider the fact that Isaiah obeyed God by streaking for three years. If the prophet refused to be naked in public, that would have been sin. Think about it. The human body is not evil; viewing God's greatest masterpiece with a sense of shame is. Viewing the body with shame was a result of the fall of man, and like Adam we cover ourselves and condemn our bodies which God made and pronounced "very good," using them as scapegoats for the true condition of our hearts. God would rather have us naked and honest than clothed and fake. Clothing is fine as a protection from the weather, but it is useless as a spiritual bandage. I used to want a nudist world, but I'm mostly an indoor nudist, because I burn faster than toast. Now my hope is for a world that is clothing optional. To quote myself, "The human skin is not a sin."

I have decided to be content with my insecurity,
Happy with uncertainty.
Such are the rights of life--
Pleasure and pain cohabit,
Making us alive,
Making us human,
Making us true to reality.

Reality supersedes us.
My understanding changes nothing.
God was before I am, yet in his heart
I will always be,
For I am his dream--
Not some fantasy of perfection,
But a complex, dance of destiny,
A high-speed chase of love.

I am God's poem,
And these words I type
Are a mere muddied reflection
Of how he sees me.

The world says God is dead.
The world is almost right--
They just have the tense wrong.
The truth is
God "was" dead
For you and me on a cross of shame.
For you and me
He traded his life
For "our" destiny.
That's true love.
And true love conquers all--even death.

He rose again in glory,
Conquering death once for all.
A pure, free gift of love
Offered to every breathing human being.
Accept the gift or deny it,
Because God will never let you buy it.
He bought it for you
With his own blood.

To us, death "was" a wall,
A finality.
Through Christ's sacrifice,
He has turned death from a wall into a door.
He is "the way, the truth...the life,"
The only way to the Father.*

Our future rests in Jesus,
And so do we.
